The Antidote #4

I’m (slowly) reading a wonderful book by Rick Warren (the author of Purpose Driven Life), it’s called “God’s Power to Change Your Life.” I highly recommend this book! It’s soooooooo good. In one section called “We Must Respond Wisely to Circumstances” Warren tells this story:
“Viktor Frankl was one of the Jews sentenced to the Nazi concentration camp at Dachau. He says that while he was in the camp, the guards stripped him of everything. They took his identity. They took his clothes. They even took his wedding ring. But there was one thing that no one could take from him. In a classic book he writes, “The last of human freedoms is the ability to choose one’s attitude in a given set of circumstances.” The guards could not take from Frankl his freedom to choose his attitude.”
He later goes on to say “We cannot control our circumstances, but we can control how we respond to them. We can control whether an experience makes ua a bitter or better person.”
Just wanted to share with you something that really stood out to me as I was reading, I hope that it can be an encouragement from this great book!

The Antidote #3
November 13, 2008 – 10:31 am
I read a book by Beth Moore about a year ago that taught me something really cool and really life changing. She talked about the power of prayer and the power of the Word of God. When you put them together, and pray Bible verses, it’s like dynamite! I just love that. And it puts together two really important things- prayer and the bible.
Prayer is the wonderful way we talk to God and He talks to us. Lately, I’ve been convicted about listening and not just running down the list of things I feel like saying. I mean think about it- would you call up a friend, and not let them get one word in? No, of course not!
The Bible is so vital to our lives. All too often, I have an opinion about something, and it may not even be biblical at all. That’s why it’s so important to know if your values and beliefs and the way you live lines up with God’s desire for your life. After all God’s rules weren’t put in place to harm us, but protect us.
Try putting the power or prayer and verse together this week! If you don’t have a bible, but would like to pray along with me. I’ll be praying Psalm 34:18:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 103:2-5
“Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits- who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. ”
Love,

Juke and Lenny
November 13, 2008 – 12:45 am
…well not really. Their names are actually Luke and Jenny, and cute baby Ellie. But when I’m talking to Brendan, I always say Juke and Lenny by accident
Jenny is a very talented photographer and while it’s really cool to get to photograph someone who does photography, I have to admit, I was a little nervous about it…ok a lot nervous. As Brendan and I waited for them to meet us my brain rehearsed some photo ideas and stared into that direct sunlight that refused to be covered by the nearby clouds.
I’m happy to say that once again, it was reaffirmed to me that they are such a cool family! And they made my job very easy. The ladies of this family are just gorgeous!
Here’s a sneak peak:
